Library Building Formulas

1. FLOOR SPACE FOR STACKS is 13 volumes per square ft.
2. FLOOR LOAD FOR STACKS is 300 lbs. per square ft.
3. SHELVING SPACE is 6 volumes per linear ft.
4. SEATING SPACE (incl. "air" space, working space and aisle space) is 25 square ft. per patron.
5. OFFICE SPACE is 125 square ft. per staff member (add 25 - 50 square ft for director and department heads).
6. PROCESSING AREA SPACE (Tech Services, Serials, etc.) is 250 square ft. per staff member.
7. PUBLIC SERVICE STAFF AREA SPACE is 150 square ft. per staff member.
8. COMPUTER TERMINAL SPACE is 25 square ft. per unit.
